Harpin’ Momma Australia’s Mother of the Blues
Enigmatic is the word best used to describe Harpin’ Momma. She is the consummate Entertainer.
Momma is not just a singer of the Blues…SHE IS A BLUES SINGER, powerful and passionate. Her powerhouse Blues and Gospel are delivered deep from her soul with a voice sometimes compared to Big Momma Thornton, Mahalia Jackson, even Janis Joplin and more recently by a French photographer at Adelaide River who likened her to Edith Piaf.
Her deep Contralto voice is used to perfection when singing Blues and Gospel. Aptly described as a “Pocket Rocket” by Big Mike Hotz of Radio 5UV in Adelaide, she is dynamic in her approach to everything she does which is seen when she picks up her piano accordion and proceeds to belt out some blues or makes it cry when laying Gospel numbers. Harpin’ Momma has written numerous songs which relate directly to her own early life and display her depth of feeling, and she uses her Roland keyboards to their fullest effect and really gets the fee a ‘stompin’, and when she picks up her harmonica, look out! (She is the best female Harp player in Australia hence the name HARPIN’ MOMMA.)
Momma has performed everywhere from Tasmania’s Republic Bar to Squires Tavern in Darwin; the H.O.G.S. Shed in Gove; Moody Blue, Upwey, Victoria, 2008; Taste of Tatura Festival, 2003-2004; Benalla Rose Festival, 2003; Whitfield End of Harvest Festival, 2003; Monichino Winery, Katunga; Fiffe Field Winery, Yarrawonga; St. Leonards Winery, Wahgunyah, Bojass Restaurant, Shepparton, Star Hotel Rutherglen 2001 2002 2003 on a monthly basis. In 1999 Harpin’ Momma was hailed as ‘Queen of the Blues’ by the South Australian Blues Society, and was introduced to the crowd at Melbourne’s Rainbow Hotel by Werner Martin as ‘EMPRESS OF THE BLUES’.
Sydney’s Blues Guru, Peter Ghossein, wrote the following lines about Harpin’ Momma “I love the Blues… She heard my cry. If love were a quenchless thirst then let me drown in the sea of love, but to hear her sing… Oh God; but to hear her soul”.
